These wading birds are ubiquitous in the US, and New England is home a wide variety. Given the marshy coastal environment, this isn’t a surprise. But herons are also very adaptable birds, and it’s not unusual to see great blue herons hunting open fields in December and January. Most of these photos were taken in Massachusetts, though a few are from Arizona.
